Desolation | Explore and Survive a Ravaged World

With the end of the spring semester comes plenty of indoor free time (more so with the events we are in right now). I think the time is right to introduce my current game project: Desolation, a 2D, exploration and survival side-scroller based in a post-apocalyptic world.

Core Systems

Desolation is currently conceptualized around procedural generation. Formulas will structure the generation of the world as you, the player, explores. Items, from gear to weapons, will also be procedurally generated based on defined item structures. No two runs in Desolation will be the same.

Desolation is influenced by games like Kingdom and Risk of Rain. It is not a game that can be played through once to completion, like an RPG. Instead, players play the game over and over through runs that could span anywhere from 10 minutes to hours, and the longer that players spend in a run, the more likely it will be that they will discover unique items and encounters that will earn players permanent rewards.

Desolation will also feature an extensive movement system that will allow players to execute Combos, special attacks that can be done by combining different key presses. This system will give players dynamic attacking and movement options for different situations. More info on this system will be explained in a future post.

Current Progress

So, how much of Desolation's concept and design has been laid out? This idea has been developing for roughly a month now, but I am still in the early design phase. I've begun work on the game's design document, which will direct the game's development in the future. As the design document is expanded, I'll post new updates on project progress and on major features, once they are fleshed out. I want to be as close to 100% decided as possible on a feature before giving it a dedicated post. However, update posts will generally cover newly added features and content regardless of their completion status.

Welcome to Desolation, and look forward to my next progress update!
